What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a modern and long-lasting solution for replacing missing or damaged teeth. It is an artificial titanium root that is surgically inserted into the jawbone, serving as a solid foundation for a replacement tooth, such as a crown, bridge, or denture.
How Does a Dental Implant Work?
1.Implant Placement: During a surgical procedure, a specialized dentist (oral surgeon) places the dental implant into the bone where a tooth previously stood. The implant is made of titanium, a biocompatible material that integrates seamlessly with the bone, a process known as osseointegration.
2.Healing and Integration: After placement, the implant requires a healing period, during which it integrates with the surrounding bone, creating a stable foundation for the replacement tooth. This process can take 3 to 6 months, depending on the patient’s individual condition.
3.Crown or Bridge Placement: Once the implant is well integrated into the bone, an abutment (a type of connection) is placed on the implant. A dental crown (for a single tooth) or a bridge (for multiple missing teeth) is then secured to the abutment, completing the treatment.
Advantages of Dental Implants
Natural Aesthetics: Dental implants are designed to mimic the appearance of a natural tooth. Ceramic or porcelain crowns are used to cover the implant, creating a natural and harmonious smile.
Durability: Dental implants are a very durable solution, capable of lasting many years, often a lifetime, if properly maintained.
Improved Functionality: Implants are highly functional and allow patients to chew, speak, and smile without worry. They are more stable than traditional dentures, which can move or become damaged.
Bone Protection: When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone can deteriorate over time. Implants help prevent this process by stimulating the bone and maintaining its density.
Comfort: Unlike removable dentures, dental implants are permanent and do not need to be removed for cleaning. They do not cause irritation or discomfort during daily use.
